The actual sculpture has no rider - Van Sant painted one of his production assistants green, and placed him on top. The engraving at the base was changed to "The Coming of the White Man," as a reference to a Washington Park monument known, in the 1970s and early 1980s, as a marketplace for those seeking late-night male company.
